Marie de La Rochefoucauld and her husband, Josias de Robillard de Champagné, were 17th-century Protestant landowners in what is now the département of the Charente Maritime.  After contemporary legislation had forced Josias to change his religion, Marie determined to remove her family from France and to seek refuge elsewhere. They left La Rochelle, in secrecy, in 1687, landed in England, and eventually travelled on to Holland.
