Event information

Helen McCookerybook presents a night of songwriters playing new material and old.

Born and raised in Northumberland, Helen McCookerybook was the bass player/singer with Brighton indie band The Chefs and guitarist/singer with Helen and the Horns in the 1980s, both of whom were favourites of BBC Radio 1’s John Peel. After a break to raise a family, she returned to the stage as a solo artist with a new set of songs, and since then has toured the UK regularly, releasing four solo albums. She has recorded or gigged with artists such as Vic Godard, Lester Square, Martin Stephenson, The Nightingales, and The Wedding Present. Her 2017 solo album, The Sea’ received airplay from BBC6’s Gideon Coe, and was supported by dates around the UK from Ullapool to Brighton; her duet with Vic Godard, “Rendezvous D’Automne’ (a cover of the Francois Hardy song) has been played by both Marc Riley and Gideon Coe.
In late 2018 Helen released the 7” single ‘Saturday Night with the London Set’, and she will be touring in 2019 to promote both the single and a new album that is currently being recorded

The Sunbathers are an acoustic two piece who write short and sometimes wistful songs about
love life and staring out to sea. (Strange for a band from the Midlands!)
Their debut album A Weekend Away With… was released last year on Seattle based Jigsaw Records who described the album as “seaside themed tweepop in the style of The Marine Girls.”

Peter Hall picked up his first guitar after hearing The Jam on the radio. He hasn’t stopped playing since. His first solo album, The Match Factory’s Burning, tells the story of one character’s life through love, loss and death with influences lined from a seam of classic British songwriting.
