Grace Petrie
Grace Petrie’s unique takes on life, love and politics, and the warmth and wit with
which they are delivered, have won over an army of loyal fans across the alternative,
folk, political and comedy scenes. She’s toured with Billy Bragg and Frank Turner,
supported comedians Robin Ince and Josie Long, and collaborated with Leon
Rosselson and Peggy Seeger. She is a frequent guest on BBC Radio 4’s the Now
Show and has appeared on Channel 4’s Random Acts.
Her new album ‘Queer As Folk’ was released Sept ’18.
‘She’s the urgent, pulsing, compassionate talent this world desperately needs.’ The Observer
Martha Hill
It’s amazing what you can achieve when you carve your own path in life. Newcastle based alt-pop musician Martha Hill grew up on a remote peninsular in Scotland but left when she was just 17 to travel Europe as a street musician. A talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, she settled in the North East and began to pen a series of pop songs that would transcend the streets, drawing on the influence of left-field artists such as Little Dragon and Sylvan Esso. Not shy of hard work, Martha Hill has played multiple DIY tours to a growing fanbase across the UK and Europe. Her self-released debut singles “Spiders” and “Wallflower” were championed by The Line Of Best Fit, BBC Radio 6 Music & Spotify Playlist amongst others. With her first two releases tackling issues such as mental health and social conformity, Hill is already getting a name for writing hard-hitting alt-pop with a social conscience
Gem Andrews
Gem andrews writes Americana and folk music with an honesty and
rawness that takes the listener by surprise and cuts to the quick. Backed
up by full harmonies, blooming fiddle melodies, piano and accordion all
supported on a sea bed of acoustic double bass and drums.
Gem Andrews’s music is deeply rooted in alt-country, with Gem’s fiercely
independent voice carrying inflections of Patsy Cline, Lucinda Williams
and Kate & Anna McGarrigle.
Gem Andrews’ powerful new album ‘North’ uses dark country to tackle
themes of mental illness, poverty, community and destitution.
Through reaching into the darkest corners of her mind, Gem has created
an intimate, stirring and above all, furious collection of songs.
Running through every song is the North East of England, as subject,
backdrop and through tribute to local legends including adaptations of poems by the great, late poet and playwright, Julia Darling. The album
captures the energy and warmth of the region as well as the rage felt at a
political class who have ignored them and been left to waste.
Beccy Owen
