Following The Cellar's tragic recent closure Bossaphonik events will take place at East Oxford Community Centre for a period.
Coming up on Friday 5th April for the first time at Bossaphonk is the Afro-Brazilian quintet of Caravela, playing samba-jazz and communal and spiritual music of 1960s Lusophone countries such as Brazil and Cape Verde. Caravela uncover music that others have left behind or long-forgotten. They are giving a new voice to beautiful songs that should not remain silent, approached with a contemporary groove and feel and an improvised jazz attitude. Weaving Portugese melodies around vibrant South American and West African-inspired rhythms with creative fervour, reimagining the influences of Baden Powell, Gilberto Gil, Mayra Andrade and Caetano Veloso. The London based group features members from Portugal, Latin America, Australia and the UK and have recently performed at the London Jazz Festival and Camden's Jazz Cafe.
