First published in 1892, The Yellow Wallpaper is a seminal work of feminist literature which explores domestic issues, such as the misdiagnosis of 'female hysteria' and the wider social and psychological implications of this.
This adaptation sets the story in the 1950s; a rapidly changing social climate paralleling the rise of Second Wave Feminism. Stifled by domestic life, our protagonist is prescribed a rest cure by her physician husband to take place in the attic room of an isolated house, with the room's strange wallpaper soon becoming her sole source of mental stimulation.
This visually enthralling performance draws on ancient dramatic technique, featuring a Greek chorus of women creeping beneath the wallpaper's surface.
This is a preview of the show which we will be taking to Edinburgh festival fringe from 20th-23rd August, 10:20am, theSpace Triplex, Edinburgh.
