Arthur Nogueira debuts in London with his new poetry and music performance
#arthurnogueirainlondon
“The Poet's Courage” is the English translation for “Coragem de Poeta”, the name of the new voice and guitar show by Brazilian singer-songwriter Arthur Nogueira. Based on the eponymous EP, released in 2019, the intimate performance focuses on the artist's original repertoire, but also celebrates composers who have championed freedom in music for decades in South America. Born in Pará, in the Amazon region, and critically acclaimed as “the contemporary artist responsible for renewing the tradition of poets in Brazilian music”, Arthur Nogueira plays for the first time in London on Saturday, 02 November 2019, at Servant Jazz Quarters (10A Bradbury Street, London N16 8JN).
“This EP was born out of the desire to understand, on the one hand, the importance of these artists in my own life and work, and, on the other hands, to contribute with my work so that, in some way, their lives and works are not lost in the shadows of intolerance that's taking over Brazil”, explains Nogueira about his concert, which includes both original songs and songs composed by iconic Brazilian and South American artists, such as Renato Russo, Cássia Eller, Cazuza, Antonio Cicero, Maria Bethânia, Mercedes Sosa and Maria Elena Walsh.
In addition to the EP's repertoire, his show “Coragem de Poeta” (“The Poet's Courage”) features songs from the artist's previous albums: “Sem Medo Nem Esperança” (“Neither Hope Nor Fear”), released in 2015, and “Rei Ninguém” (“King Nobody”), released in 2017, as well as what Nogueira defines as “affection songs”. “I gathered songs from my albums and others that I like to sing at home. For example, “Janelas Abertas” (“Open Windows”), written by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, the poet who dismantled the boundaries between poetry and popular songs in Brazil and “London London”, which is referred to by British critics as the broken english classic, written by my idol and dear friend Caetano Veloso, who was exiled to London in the early 1970s”, he anticipates. In London, he also promises to sing one of Tom Waits' most emblematic songs,”Anywhere I lay my head", which will ring bells to Londoners: “I went and set the Thames on fire.”
Arthur Nogueira (Belém, 1988) understands music as a potential platform for great literary works in Brazil and around the world. Acclaimed as “the contemporary artist responsible for renewing the tradition of poets in Brazilian music” (Newspaper O Globo), he has recorded four albums and set to music poems by important authors, such as Antonio Cicero (Brazil), Adonis (Syria) and Rose Ausländer (Ukraine). His most recent album, “Rei Ninguém” (“King Nobody”), released in 2017, was nominated for the 19th Latin Grammy in the Best Engineered Album category. Aged 31, his songs have been recorded by great Brazilian singers, such as Gal Costa ("Sem Medo Nem Esperança") and Fafá de Belém ("Ave do Amor").
