On Friday 21st January Bossaphonik proudly presents Onipa at Cowley Workers Social Club.

Onipa’s sound is an African-electronic fusion which takes classic Afrobeat from the golden era 1970s sound merged with plenty of electronic synthesisers and effects to produce the sound of Afrofuturism. Onipa means "human" in Akan, the ancient language of the Ashanti people from Ghana. It's a message of connection through collaboration - from Ghana to London, our ancestors to our children, Onipa brings energy, groove, electronics, dance and fire!

The band include luminary musicians from past bands to have featured at Bossaphonik such as K.O.G. (Kweku Of Ghana) on vocals, balafon and percussion, Tom Excell of Nubiyan Twist (acclaimed jazz, soul and Afrobeat pioneers recently featured on Jools Holland on BBC 1 TV) on guitar and electronics, Joe Henwood also from Nubiyan Twist on Saxes and electronics and band members on drums and synthesisers.

Onipa was originally born out of a deep collaboration between long-term friends K.O.G. and Tom Excell and now the band offer a rare take on live Afrofuturism with dazzling energy and meticulous musicianship. The sounds of original Afrobeat drums and classic fingerpicked guitar with horns meet the future sounds of club electronics in a rare hugely exhilarating experience.

Since their explosive entry in 2018, Onipa have played over 40 shows in 10 different countries including Glastonbury in the Uk and Fusion Festival in Germany, winning support from The Guardian, Clash Magazine, Radio Nova and many other media outlets. They have now released 2 albums on the Strut label.

Following Onipa is a Bossaphonik club session til 2am with DJ Bossaphonik Dan bringing forth dancefloor joy with Afrobeat * Brazilica and Latino Loveliness * Balkan Beats * Future Soul * Nu Jazz Bizniz!
