[Day 6: 13/08/2021)
Passport to Pimlico (Henry Cornelius, 1949):
One of the funniest British movies ever made, this Ealing comedy from 1949 has acquired an entire new dimension with the Brexit debate. Initially created in order to celebrate the spirit of unity in post-war London, the movie can now be interpreted as a comment on British nationalism and short-sighted independence claims. The titular London district has become independent following the discovery of a medieval document unearthed after the accidental denotation of an unexploded WW2 bomb. The sovereign state almost immediately shuns drinking regulations and establishes itself as a smuggler’s paradise. But almighty Britain is soon to retaliate, and the newly-formed nation has a very dear price to pay.
