The New Traditional presents: Samantha Whates & Ida Wenøe
Wenøe & Whates met several years ago whilst attending the Chris Difford Songwriting retreat, they shared an instant connection through their music and forged a long distance friendship, Wenøe based in Denmark & Whates in London. The pair were reunited 2 years later whilst attending Folk Alliance in Kansas City where they both had been selected as official showcasing artists.
It was however, during their UK 2020 tour that they started to collaborate a little more, performing together and finding new arrangements for each other's favourite songs, the pair came away feeling like they had more to do. The response from these collaborative elements of the show really spoke to the audiences and everyone seemed to love to see them sing together and they have since been developing this collaboration to make it more of an official part of the event!
Ida and Samantha will be heading out again March 2022 to do it again but with bells on! They have been working hard to make a really special show of brand new, never performed material and collaborating on new arrangements of older favourite songs! Expect beautiful harmonies, a multi instrumental element played by the pair and perhaps some special guests along the way too! It's how it was but even better!
Samantha Whates
Scottish singer-songwriter and Rough Trade Records recording artist Samantha Whates is a hugely respected figure on the folk & roots scene. Her beautifully crafted, poetic songs retain a strong affinity with her Scottish roots, cultivating a sound that is thoroughly contemporary, rooted in tradition, yet uniquely her own. She recently formed new Rough Trade Records signings PicaPica. Her debut album Dark Nights Make For Brighter Days has enjoyed both critical acclaim and extensive radio play (BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 2, KCRW, Resonance FM). Samantha’s last album Waiting Rooms, was recorded live in a variety of emotionally-charged locations, all waiting rooms, across the UK. Each space brought something new to the process, the end product of which is a field recording opus, as well as just reward for an epic emotional/logistical challenge, held together with the warp and weft of Samantha’s deft voice and her intuitive lyrics. Out now on Wonderfulsound. Samantha is currently putting the finishing touches to a brand new self produced and recorded EP to be released early 2022.

Ida Wenøe
Amongst a digital mountain range littered with accomplished folk-ish bands and singer-songwriters, it’s a rare miracle to come across a cave so rich in jewels as the one beneath Ida Wenøe’s ribcage.
While Ida has an obvious appreciation of Americana, her sound is laced with more English undertones: the kind of sound Edward Woodward might have heard downstairs in the local inn had the Wicker Man been filmed in a remote Danish village, while Sarah Lund scoured for clues in her jumper. Like the best of the Nordic Noir leaving the Danish mainland, the recordings are at once both sonically pure and grimy; there’s a shared loneliness that makes you feel that you’re not at all; and all the while there is an honesty to the song-writing that tugs at your sleeve.
Ida recently put out her second single “Echoes” from her album coming out later this year. The single was very well received and supported by the likes of by BBC 6 & BBC Ulster. Ida is a 2021 Danish Music Award winner of Roots Artist of the Year.
