“Kate Ellis put down her law degree to pick up a guitar – thank God she did!” BBC RADIO
River Rose Records is delighted to present the launch show for folk/americana artist Kate Ellis's spellbinding new album Spirals (released February 2022) at the historic Betsey Trotwood. The elegant upstairs drawing-room at this famous venue is one of the best places in London to experience intimate, acoustic music.
There is a timeless quality to Kate's music, reflecting a love of classic singer/songwriters, from Gram Parsons and Gillian Welch to Mary Chapin Carpenter, Leonard Cohen and Nanci Griffith.
A journalist for the OBSERVER described "hauntingly beautiful songs," while TALK RADIO said: "Hits you straight in the heart. One of those artists that on first listen, you just know you’re going to love."
Kate started writing songs when she decided to put down her law degree and pick up a guitar. This led to her critically acclaimed debut album Carve Me Out in 2017. MAVERICK MAGAZINE called it: “wryly reflective, sweetly melodic, touchingly compassionate and warm-hearted.” RNR MAGAZINE described it as: “delicate, melodic music with the ring of truth to her words and that most elusive quality, soul.”
Kate's follow-up sophomore album Spirals is “a collection of songs that came out of a process of soul searching” and has been four years in the making. It was produced by John Reynolds (Sinead O'Connor, Indigo Girls, Damian Dempsey) and is a record that allowed her to take the whirlwind in her head and put it to song. The theme of Spirals reflects Kate’s attempts “to find a new understanding of ways to cope with the demons and dramas that can take over our minds.”
