Junko Kobayashi was born in Japan, and studied with Professors Takashi & Machiko Asahina. After graduating in music at the Folkwang Universität der Künste, Essen, Germany, she arrived in London to study with Maria Curcio, who had been a pupil of Schnabel, and with Louis Kentner.
She made a concerto debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in 1988. Since then, she has given recitals in the St John’s Smith Square, the Purcell Room, the Wigmore Hall, the David Josefovich Recital Hall in the Royal Academy of Music, the Holywell Music Room in Oxford, and elsewhere. She has toured all over the Great Britain and in four continents. As soloist she played with Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Caracas Municipal Symphony Orchestra, Polish Baltic Symphony Orchestra and others.
She has broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and has appeared on WKAR TV in the USA, and ZDF TV in Germany. Her discography includes Nocturnes, two CDs of sonatas by Beethoven including the Appassionata and the Waldstein, and she released a Chopin CD in 2017.
In 1997, Junko co-founded the Takemitsu Society and was chair of the Takemitsu Society for fifteen years. She is included in “Bridges: Anglo-Japanese Cultural Pioneers”; played a concert for The Japanese Women’s Association in Great Britain at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan in 2014; and gave a recital at the invitation of the members of the Athenaeum Club in London in 2017.
