The Cornwall King of the agricultural garage-gypsy sound backed by his screaming dukes of skiffle, playing their first show at the new Jamboree in King's Cross. Support comes from Tsvey Kipperim playing Eastern European Jewish music, Romani music, Balkan Mediterranean folk.
Described by angry locals as the bastard son of Waits, Strummer, Reinhardt and Rachmaninov, Julian Gaskell’s music over the last 20 years has followed a wayward path of withering agricultural-folk, klezmer accordion, overly-lyrical punk, gypsy-jazz guitar, tangos, waltzes, rhumbas and skiffled-up boogie-woogie piano.
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, named after the Robert Tressell book, are Julian’s long-suffering band:
Thomas Pooley Tolkien Sharpe on banjo, piano, mandolin, vocals
Cally Gibson on viola and violin
Nigel Parsons on bass
Matthew Collington on drums
“such originality, intelligence and appeal that the ability to hear seems like a privilege” -Vive le Rock
“a gorgeous, gorgeous folky voice” – BBC Introducing
“he really is an original- declamatory, vulpine vocals ranting and roaring his splendidly acrid, protestful lyrics over a glorious, urgent ramshackle garage blend of Balkan-Klezmerisms and French gypsy cafebilly” – fRoots
“Just too confrontational” – Guy Garvey
Tsvey Kipperim
Separated from the shoal, these two breakaway Kippers (from Don Kipper) delve deeply into the Neshama (spirit) of Jewish music. In their performances they take an audience on an odyssey through Eastern Europe, touching on many of the traditions which have influenced East European Jewish Music, such as Romani Music, and rural folk traditions from around the Balkans and the Mediterranean. From Greece to Moldova via a synagogue in Kiev they move with wit, joy, and sadness in equal measure. Through the intimate interplay between accordion and the clarinet, these two musicians explore the potentials that a deep working relationship, a shared love for the tradition, and a profound friendship can create.
