Sheffield has a rich musical tradition, and none better than its singers. Four mixed choirs have united in friendship for the very first time, to bring you A Sprig of Thyme, a set of folk songs, arranged by John Rutter, together with a sample of their own individual repertoires.
Stannington Mixed Choir, and Thurgoland Community Choir, who have been singing together since 1987 and 2012 respectively, are both directed by Hilary Osborn, who was a founding member of Stannington choir. Vivacity, based in Hillsborough, have a dynamic musical team led by Kate van der Riet and Caroline Hallam, and have been singing together since 2008, and the Stocksbridge-based Waldershelf Singers Choir celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. Director, Rachel Atkinson, has been with the group for over 20 years, and it still includes an original member.
Each choir has its own unique history of concerts and successes at festivals, presenting a range of music from classical pieces, to folk, jazz, pop and musical show favourites. They are all self-supporting and thriving concerns, whose values are the love of singing, and supporting the local community and various charities.
On this occasion they have pooled their considerable resources to bring you this performance, ably supported by a chamber orchestra of local musicians. These welcoming choirs are open to all ages and abilities, and more details about each can be found online.
