Bossaphonik is back on Friday February 17th with a band that tears up the musical rulebook in a fusion blend of traditions, the spectacular Lokkhi Terra. They are one of Bossaphonik organiser Dan Ofer’s favourite UK bands from the night’s 18 year history.
Lokkhi Terra take at their core traditional Bangladeshi folk music and reinterpret it in a context of jazz-funk and Afro-Cuban grooves! Formed and led by Bangladesh-born pianist Kishon Khan, he conceived the project in the early 2000s whilst studying music in Cuba. He noticed a synergy between the rumba on the streets of Havana and the baul music of Bangladesh. This strange synergy made more sense once back in London where different communities mix and hang out.
The resulting sound is a modern cutting-edge fusion of influences, which along with Bengali baul music includes Indian classical, Afrobeat, Cuban rumba, Latin jazz, reggae and funk in a highly danceable groove. Appearing for this gig as an 8 piece ensemble – virtuosic played Rhodes piano sits alongside a soaring horn section with both Bengali and Cuban vocalists propelled by a three part percussion section of congas, bongos/bells and a nimble kit drummer.
Lokkhi Terra’s band members are made up of musicians who take seriously the various musical languages of the different genres they mix. They are almost all band leaders of their own high calibre projects and these musicians boast serious pedigree. Lokkhi Terra leader Kishon Khan has played with Hugh Masekela, Tony Allen, Ibrahim Ferrer (Buena Vista Social Club) and Gilles Peterson’s Havana Cultura Project. The various other band members have played with or been part of bands with Bjork, Jazz Jamaica, Ska Cubano, Africa Express, The James Taylor Quartet, Cornell Campbell, Johnny Clarke, Kyle Eastwood and Bellowhead and many others. Lokkhi Terra have released six critically acclaimed LPs on Kishon’s own Funkiwala label that has also seen the releases of many of the projects of this family of musicians.
Lokkhi Terra have featured at one of main stages of Womad Festival, have headlined The South Asia Games closing ceremony in a televised show, played numerous sold-out shows at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club and played at clubs and festivals worldwide.
