Sheffield based musician and singer Michael Walsh grew up learning Sligo style flute playing in Manchester, a hotbed of Irish traditional music. His critically acclaimed debut album, Quarehawk, was launched at Cambridge Folk Festival co-produced in Manchester with Michael McGoldrick and in Sheffield with Tom Wright and Sam Proctor. His music is a mix of Irish and English traditional influences as well the Asturian folk music he learned during his doctoral research at the University of Sheffield. He has recorded with BBC Folk singer of the year Ríoghnach Connolly, Basque Trikitixa maestro Kepa Junkera and the great Manchester poet Mike Garry. Expect a roller coaster ride of emotions as through music, song and spoken word he tells the story of growing up in the Irish community in Manchester and documents the emotions he went through after his father died tragically during the recording. It’s a work of loss and celebration. His special guest Quarehawks on the night include a rare appearance from the English folk legend and multi-instrumentalist Gina Lefaux and Roscommon Flute player Paul Daly.
