Event information

It's a double-helping of American-Norwegian rock brilliance, as The Minus 5 & The No Ones come to rock Knockholt!

The Minus 5 is (yet another!) band featuring Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck, and is where a three-decade collaboration started. You might know Scott McCaughey from The Young Fresh Fellows, the mighty and fearless US alternative rock band hailing from Seattle. Scott then also went on to tour & record with R.E.M. from 1994 until their disbandment in 2011. As for Peter Buck - he was a founder member of R.E.M..; their lead guitarist; the man on mandolin (think Losing My Religion...); and, as part of R.E.M. an inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as well as a multiple Grammy & Brit award winner.

Asides from R.E.M. and The Minus 5, McCaughey & Buck's musical adventures have seem them share vans (and the occasional bus) with Filthy Friends; Tuatara; The Baseball Project; Tired Pony; CeDell Davis; Robyn Hitchcock & Venus 3; Alejandro Escovedo; and Luke Haines.

The Minus 5 has a floating (and frankly ridiculously long) membership, but the core of what they do is largely whatever they want, most of the time, as well as providing a very welcome ongoing vehicle for the lyrical and musical magic that emanates from Mr Scott McCaughey.

Over the course of at least 13 (?) albums, 30+ singles/compilations, and countless live line-up fluctuations, the band-that-wasn’t-meant-to-be-a-band has toured with both Wilco and Tweedy, and appeared on Conan O’Brien and The Late Show/David Letterman.

Their newest release, out this June, will be 'Calling Cortez (Neil Vol. 3)', a continuation of tributes to the great Neil Young (which started with 2020’s Scott The Hoople NEIL (Vol. 1)... one would assume that there will be a Vol. 2 as well?)

On the new record, Neil Young songs share equal space with songs written by Scott McCaughey, but inspired by Mr. Young. The album features contributions from Minus 5 favorites like Kurt Bloch, Joe Adragna, Mike McCready, Linda Pitmon Wynn, Debbi Peterson, Jenny Conlee-Drizos, Jeff & Spencer Tweedy, Casey Neill, Jim Talstra, and Pauly Pulvirenti.

As well as the new album, 2023 will find The Minus 5 hitting the road, on tour with The No Ones (more on them very shortly!). They will be weaving through the USA's Great Northwest, before heading on to Norway and the UK - including a visit to The Three Horseshoes! - for their first UK shows in over 15 years.

Now, onto The No Ones.

The No Ones are Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey (do they sound familiar?!), Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen and Frode Strømstad - the latter two both known for their work with the excellent Norwegian jangle/power-pop band I Was A King. They will be 'opening' for The Minus 5 (and Mathiesen & Stromstad will, of course, be part of the M5 on this tour, adding to that very long membership list), meaning you get two big helpings of American-Norwegian rock brilliance in one night!

The No Ones were borne out of a festival in the Arctic Circle in 2015, which brought the pairings of Buck-McCaughey & Mathisen-Strømstad together. Their debut album, 'The Great Lost No Ones Album', was released on Yep Rec Records in 2020, and followed on the back of two EPs. Their latest album, 'My Best Evil Friend', is released on Yep Roc on March 31, and pays tribute to the artists that inspire them and populate their turntables.

Through their upbeat '60s-style indie sound infused with psychedelic flourishes, The No Ones honor Nick Lowe, Pamela Polland, George Harrison, Jenny Lewis, and Phil Ochs, among others. The group enlisted contributions from friends Debbi Peterson (Bangles), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), and Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) for backing vocals, Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven) on bass, and strings from Marin Stallemo Bakke.

This is an amazing double-header lineup, as the bi-continental collaborators showcase a range of treasures from their musical cabinets.

And, it's a chance to see THE Peter Buck play in an English pub garden!

Support will come from the Martin Mickels Band!

Martin Mickels music career has spanned over three decades. Releasing solo and band albums and touring the UK and Europe with Sweet, Statetrooper, Never The Bride and Violent Storm. Also appearing in Guitarist of the Year 2000 and Sky Arts Guitar Star with Black Sabbaths Tony Iommi in 2015. Martin also plays with local legends Randy and the Rockets. The newly formed Martin Mickels Band play all original material from an upcoming new album!
