International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Princes Risborough Town Council is proud to welcome you to its first International Women’s Day event at the Brushwood Suite on Wednesday 8 March 2023. Join us for an informal evening of celebration, inspiration, and connection as we hear from a panel of wonderful women on the topics of Health, Welfare, and Sociology. This event is inclusive and open to all. Licensed bar will be available and all tickets are seated.
Speakers include:
'Votes and Voices: Marching for a Better World’
Hailing from Haddenham, Jane Robinson has been described as 'one of our most engaging and original social historians.' She writes about women pioneers; is a Fellow of the Royal Historical and Royal Geographical Societies and a Senior Associate of Somerville College, Oxford. Her 13th book, a biography of the social reformer Barbara Bodichon, is due out in 2024.
‘Step out of the Shadows: Shy and Mighty’
Nadia Finer is on a softly spoken mission to help shy people be more mighty. The UK’s leading shyness expert, Nadia is the author of two books about shyness - Shy and Mighty and Shy and Mighty for Kids, the host of the Shy and Mighty podcast and a coach specialising in shyness. Nadia believes shyness is not a weakness, or a shameful secret. And that shy people do not need to change who they are. Shy people have so many talents and gifts; it is time for them to step out of the shadows, because the world needs to hear their voices.
A regular speaker in organisations and in schools around the country. Nadia has appeared on Radio 4 Saturday Live, Woman’s Hour and ITV News. She has also been in the Times, Guardian, the Telegraph, The Independent and in Good Housekeeping.
‘One Day or Day One - You decide’
Suzanne Shaw’s big break came in 2001 when she auditioned for the ITV show Popstars, and subsequently won a place in the newly-formed pop band, Hear’say. The group’s debut single was the fastest selling non-charitable record in UK chart history, selling over 1.3 million copies. When the band split in 2003, Suzanne returned to her roots and has gone on to carve a successful career in musical theatre, plays and television.
Over recent years after a big lifestyle change, Suzanne has become a huge wellness advocate. Suzanne’s been documenting an honest account of her health journey through her online platforms along with becoming an avid runner. In May 2020, she ran for 19 hours non-stop for the 19 people who take their own lives in the UK every day, raising money and awareness for the Samaritans. Suzanne is also the founder of The Happy Healthy Club which is a community for people to enjoy learning more about the benefits of nutrition, sobriety, movement and mindfulness.
‘Food for Thought’
Kate Brewster became a trustee of One Can Trust in 2020 and, drawing on her background in journalism and communications, supported the organisation across related areas such as media, marketing, fundraising and stakeholder engagement. Kate also works for the charity, Action for Children, and is a proud resident of High Wycombe. She will be offering information about the food bank and support services, what they are seeing, and the importance of community.
Please note, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance for the discounted early bird rate of £5. Tickets will be available on the door for £7 subject to availability. All proceeds will be split between various women's charities.
