On Friday 16 June, Speakeasy are proud to bring you an evening of indie goodness. Opening the night are Cheltenham's SIRACUSE, purveyors of big beat indie psychedelia, drenched in reverb, with driving bass lines and distorted guitars. While reminiscent of Kasabian, The Music, early Oasis, Verve, and The Jesus and Mary Chain, they add their own modern take on that sound. Their tunes feature echoed vocals twinned with big choruses, with a strong nod to pioneer shoegaze bands. SIRACUSE release Forever (Expanded Edition) on March 17, a reissue of their 2020 debut with three new tunes, on new label Vibrant Sky Records. A collection of SIRACUSE’s best work to date, Forever follows on from 2017’s Control EP which gained support from John Kennedy’s Xposure show on Radio X and Amazing Radio, amongst other fans on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Kynd returned to the stage in 2021 after a 20-year hiatus, playing a string of sold-out London dates as well as festival appearances at Shiiine On, Truck Festival, and Speakeasy. Originally amongst the first wave of ‘90s Britpop bands, they garnered recognition after releasing the Andy Bell (RIDE/Oasis)-produced ‘Egotripper’, which was championed by long-time supporter and influential broadcaster Gary Crowley, amongst others, and saw the band dubbed “new indie hopefuls” by the NME and “Power Brit Pop!” by the Melody Maker. After further touring, the band’s second single, ‘World’s Finest’, received substantial radio play and the debut album Shakedown was released to critical acclaim in the UK and commercial success in Japan, where it was issued on the influential Japanese label Philter Records. Already teasing fans with two excellent singles, December 2022’s ‘Whispers & Tones’ and the just-released ‘Older’, their eagerly awaited second album, Timelines, which was recorded with producer Brian O’Shaughnessy (Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Dodgy) at the infamous Bark Studios and mastered by Barry Grint (Oasis, R.E.M., Wolf Alice), drops on 10 March.
Formed in December 2018, The Institutes have blazed onto the UK underground music scene on their terms, signing to Manchester’s 42’s Records in 2020 and releasing their highly-acclaimed debut album Colosseums. Hailing from Coventry, the five-piece have built a solid and loyal following for their addictive and mesmerising tunes. The band’s musical output is too eclectic to pigeonhole, but wears its influences proudly, sitting somewhere between shoegaze and indie rock, with a nod in the direction of Fleetwood Mac’s harmonies and The Byrds’ psychedelic jangles. 2022 was a huge year for The Institutes: they kicked it off in style with an invitation from one of their heroes, Tim Burgess, to appear on his legendary Twitter Listening Party, followed by their first USA tour, playing 20 shows in two weeks including packed out gigs at tastemaker festivals SXSW in Austin and New Colossus in New York, plus a SOLD OUT headlining show in Los Angeles, as well as festival appearances at Isle Of White, Camper Calling and Shiiine On Weekender. Colosseums’ first vinyl pressing quickly sold in 2022 and has therefore been re-pressed in a stunning new 180g heavyweight ‘splatter’ vinyl format and will be available from March 17 and standby for news on the second album, due later this year.
