Delve into the history of the Derwent Valley Line, starting from the development of waterways and early railways in the area, the first railway to reach Derby and the “Tri-joint” station. Continuing on, this talk covers the opening of the North Midland Railway, early railway excursions to Matlock and the arrival of the Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway, discovering people, interesting stories and how the network and individual stations developed. To conclude, the talk describes a trip from Derby to Rowsley along the railway, looking at the historic railway infrastructure and buildings and other important heritage sites that can be seen from the train.
