The Butterley Company was formed in 1790 as Outram & Co. by Benjamin Outram and Francis Beresford. Later partnering with William Jessop and John Wright. The day to day running of the Company undertaken by Outram, with the aid of his brother Joseph and manager George Goodwin. Following Outram’s untimely death in 1805 and the name change to the Butterley Company, the remaining partners realised that new blood had to be brought in to ensure the future of the Company. They appointed William Brunton was Chief Engineer, who was the first of five eminent engineers to guide the Company through the 19th century golden era.
In his talk, Tim Castledine will review the life and achievements of these engineers; endeavours that ensured the Butterley Company built and maintained a reputation as a leading international engineering business.
