Controversy over refugees is nothing new. In 1937 the infamous bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War, commemorated by Picasso's famous painting, led directly to the evacuation of four thousand Basque children to Southampton and led to a political storm. It was the largest single influx of refugees ever to arrive in this country and the first to consist solely of children. This award-winning documentary film (certified 12A) tells the remarkable story of The Guernica Children. After the event, join Steve Bowles - the Director and Producer of the film, with Chris Stephens from Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group https://swvg-refugees.org.uk/ to contrast the Basque children with the situation for asylum seekers and refugees today.
This event is free as part of the Creative Connections project, although donations to SWVG are welcome. It is programmed to accompany the exhibition, Creative Connections Southampton, as part of which artist Pete Codling explores the story of the Basque children's arrival in Southampton. The Gallery will be open between 5pm and 6pm so that you can explore the exhibition.
Doors for this event open at 5pm, the film will be screened at 6pm and the event is scheduled to finish at 7.30pm.
In the unlikely event of our having to cancel a session, we will offer a full refund. Unfortunately tickets are otherwise non-refundable. Please contact us if you wish to transfer your ticket to a friend if you cannot attend for any reason.
