Suzie Ungerleider, American born, but completely steeped in a Canadian upbringing and based once again in Vancouver, back out on the road with a gorgeous, album declaring her true name, but also celebrating her earlier works which were recorded under the stage name Oh Susanna.
After a solo date at The Greys last year, Suzie's back, this time with very classy, guitarist from The Netherlands, BJ Baartmans (no stranger to us, as he is an integral part of Iain Matthews' resurrected Southern Comfort).
With a pure voice simultaneously wistful, joyous and melancholic, Suzie's songs feature lyrics that jab, tweak and tease the emotions whilst the melodies soothe and disturb. She has a very fine sense of storytelling that hasn't waned over the 20+ years since, as Oh Susanna, she brought her first, superb, couple of albums to The Greys (a truly classy Mike Lance find).
Though that character allowed her to develop and become a well established figure throughout Canada and way beyond, Suzie came to realise that the less savoury elements associated with that name did not fit the person she is, nor the breadth of her own music. So, Suzie ditched what might be seen as racist and demeaning and proudly dons her given name and, in so doing, embraces her true self.
After a showcase at AMAUK in 2019, we enticed Suzie back to highlight a date at The Greys, which, after that pandemical covilurgy delay, proved to be a fab return. And we get to do it again, here in the wonderful setting of The Folklore Rooms.
