[Day 07: 21/07/2023]

Sebastiane (Derek Jarman, 1976):

Visually bewitching and masterfully acted, Sebastiane portrays the life of early Christian saint and martyr Saint Sebastian, including his iconic killing by arrows. Sebastian (Leonardo Treviglio) is a member of Roman Emperor Diocletan’s personal guard exiled to a remote coastal area and reduced in rank following a very noble deed: saving the life of one of the Emperor’s young male lovers. Sebastian is a follower of the Roman Sun God Phoebus Apollo, and he transforms his homosexual desire into worship and pacifism. What follows are some of the most celebrated homoerotic images in film history.

Derek Jarman’s movie blends historical epic, religious chronicle and LGBT+ drama, featuring a score by Brian Eno and Andrew Thomas Wilson. Entirely spoken in Latin, Sebastiane quickly amassed a loyal gay following and established itself as an essential arthouse classic.
The stellar cast also includes Peter Hinwood, Nell Campbell, Patricia Quinn and Pamela Rooke (Jordan), amongst many others.
