Tonight's music will happen indoors – even though it looks like the worst of the weather will have past, we're not expecting the sort of balmy summer evening that we need to be sitting outdoors. There's plenty of room for us all indoors – and you'll be able to stretch your legs outside and enjoy the garden anyway – then come back inside.
You are welcome to arrive early and picnic in the garden, any time from 4pm.
To get to Bigadon, go along the A38 from Ashburton towards Plymouth. Take the second exit, signed Lower Dean, and Pennywell Farm (on a brown sign). Follow the signs to Pennywell Farm, past Dean Court Farm Shop on your left (closes 4pm) - just before you get to Pennywell, there's a gateway on the left with a green board listing Bigadon Cottage, among others. Take this lane for nearly a mile, ignore the turnings on the left. You're there.
Saturday 15 July, 7pm (come and picnic from 4pm)
Hausmusik #2 Bigadon Cottage, near Buckfastleigh
This lovely old house with it’s gorgeous views along the Dart valley has become a firm favourite festival venue. Thanks again to Mike and Barbara for allowing us to share it with them. There’s a huge garden with lawns, woods and a stone circle, which makes it the perfect place to come early and bring a picnic.
Hausmusik
These are informal gatherings where David Yang brings a wide range of music – from Haydn and Mozart to Britten, Debussy and Bartok – chats with the audience and a consensus emerges about what the musicians will play, and then they do, sight-reading the pieces together without any rehearsal! It’s fun, but they do
take the music seriously, and it’s extraordinary to witness. This is the sort of thing that professional musicians do all the time, but it’s rare to be able to watch it happen, especially in such beautiful, intimate settings. In these first events of the festival we’ll watch the musicians getting to know each other – these will be their first performances together as a quartet.

This is part of Ashburton Chamber Music Festival (ACMF) 2023 – a series of concerts, hausmusiks (where the musicians sight-read what the audience chooses) and other events in and around Ashburton from 14 – 23 July 2022. To see everything that's happening, and more about the music and the musicians go to ashburtonarts.org.uk/acmf.
There's a choice of three ticket prices for each event – please pay what you can. If you'd like to buy a Festival Pass for some or all of the events in the festival these are £75 full price; or £50 or £40 if you need a cheaper one. Please email boxoffice@ashburtonarts.org.uk to arrange this.
