WRECKLESS ERIC
SIMON LOVE
Sat 28th October 2023
The Moon, Cardiff
7pm-10pm Ages 18+
WRECKLESS ERIC needs little introduction as the artist behind classic ‘WHOLE WIDE WORLD’, a hit back in 1977 and then for countless other artists like The Monkees, Cage The Elephant and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. As his real name ERIC GOULDEN, it’s a little more complicated - musician, artist, writer, recording engineer, producer - he didn’t like the music business, mechanics of fame or the name he’d been given to hide behind so crawled out of the spotlight and disappeared into the underground.
Eric released 20-something albums in 40-something years under various names - The Len Bright Combo, Le Beat Group Electrique, The Donovan Of Trash, The Hitsville House Band and with his wife as one half of Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby, finally realising he was stuck with the name WRECKLESS ERIC.
His 3 most recent albums ‘amERICa’, ‘Construction Time & Demolition’ and ‘Transcience’ are widely praised as his best work - encapsulating pop, bubblegum, garage trash and psychedelia - lyrical and sonic journeys, pop explosions, epic voyages, Polaroid snapshots.
New album ‘Leisureland’ is out this August and marks a return to more ramshackle recording with guitars and temperamentally unpredictable analogue keyboards, beatboxes and loops in conjunction with real drummer Sam Shepherd. The recording methodology may have been Contemporary American but the subject matter is almost entirely British. It also contains more instrumentals than any of his previous albums.
From Eric: “..before the pandemic I used to tour all the time - it was almost as though I was addicted to it - new places, new people. During lockdown I couldn’t go anywhere. I think that’s why I started to invent a place. Covid hit me hard - damaged my lungs, gave me a heart attack - I almost died in the emergency room. I began to feel extremely..mortal. I began to look at where I’ve been and where I come from. Maybe to get my mind off the ultimate destination.. Welcome to Leisureland”.
“burns like a lost Crazy Horse classic” - Shindig!
“a scarily powerful and forward-moving musical threat'“ - MOJO
“new music that connects to old music without maudlin nostalgia or huffy defensiveness, refusing to let age dim the passion for the music that means the most to him. In other words, he rocks” Ken Tucker, NPR

SIMON LOVE: Witty garage pop rock also on Tapete Records. Simon’s debut ‘It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time’ was nominated for the WELSH MUSIC PRIZE, and second album 'Sincerely, S. Love x' received much critical acclaim while he toured Europe a few times and played in the USA. Third album ‘Love, Sex and Death etc’ is influenced by Nick Lowe, Kevin Ayers, Silver Jews, Ween and all the Kinks between 1971-75. The title comes from the fact that every song mentions or references love, sex and/or death in the lyrics. That fact makes this a concept album but even though it’s a concept album, there’s no through line, no direct narrative, so Simon says you can listen to it however you want. "A potty-mouthed UK version of Father John Misty…fantastic"
