Event information

Bryony Griffith & Alice Jones are established solo artists – and have existed for years at the heart of the UK folk scene. Together they have become a force for the Yorkshire Tradition, and are turning heads far beyond the Dales and moorland that they sing about.

Drawing on a wealth of stories inspired by the landscape, language and industry of their surroundings, from heart rending unaccompanied tales of woe, to lively ditties about curious local characters and events, Bryony and Alice’s fresh and masterful interpretations of these treasured old songs allow the narrative to shine through. Each track showcases their instinct for melody and their devotion to research has unearthed some unique versions of more familiar songs.

Via villages, valleys and moorlands they channel their own brand of Yorkshire folk music. Combining their respect and understanding of traditional song, music and dance with their own more contemporary style of folk performance. Together they present a unique repertoire of harmony, history and Northern banter. Bryony and Alice’s music celebrates a shared love for community heritage that resonates throughout Yorkshire and beyond.

Bryony Griffith is one of England’s most highly regarded fiddle players and distinctive singers with passion for her native Yorkshire – Her solo work is critically acclaimed, Mojo cited her work as “sublime” – she has toured extensively with folk ensemble The Demon Barbers and also with her husband, Will Hampson.

Alice Jones is a singer, step-dancer and multi-instrumentalist from Ripponden in West Yorkshire. She has grown up steeped in traditional music and dance from a young age and has performed at most of the prestigious folk festivals in the UK as well as touring in Europe and beyond. Her debut solo album “Poor Strange Girl” was released to high acclaim in 2016, BBC Radio 3’s Verity Sharp describing Alice as “superb & sincere” – and Songlines called her album, “an unusually powerful debut.”
