Jim Ghedi and Toby Hay are a duo project between two finger style guitarists, coming together to blend influences and different styles of playing to create a unique sound for guitar based folk music. Their self titled album is out on Topic Records on May 26th 2023: This album, their second collaboration after 2018’s The Hawksworth Grove Sessions was originally to be recorded in early 2020, but, as Toby describes “the world had different plans”. It had different plans for all of us, as we all ventured into a dark global pandemic.
As life trickled back again in February 2022, the two headed into Giant Wafer Studios, mid Wales, with very little rehearsal time and recorded the entire album live, with no edits or overdubs over three days, tucked away amongst the farms, rolling hills and silence of rural Mid Wales. This new record is the sound of two men in conversation yet speaking in one voice. Jim plays 6-string, Toby plays twelve-string but the sound they make is of a third entirely new and other-worldly instrument, vast, burnished, delicate, intricate, ancient, modern and utterly unique.
“Ghedi and Hay may be working in a deep tradition, but there’s something to their playing that feels distinct...” ~ Uncut
“Lovely fluid folk guitar duets LP recorded in a single, tea fuelled weekend after week’s of jamming on tour together.” - MOJO
"An absolute delight and a balm for saturated times. Their dexterity on the strings creates a sonic density that touches the psychedelic; it conjures an uncanny human presence, as if they’ve snared old ghosts and forgotten voices, and given them new life.”
~ The Quietus
