Songs and Symphony
Having shone radiantly and poignantly in Mahler’s Das Lied von Der Erde, Janice Watson returns to the WPO in Mahler’s youthful Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, setting German romantic poetry. The Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s Tristan Isolde provides a passionate contrast. Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony, which survived a disastrous premiere, gave the composer severe creative block, only alleviated by hypnotism. The subsequent disappearance, or suppression, of the score, to be reconstructed after Rachmaninoff’s death, led to it taking it's firm place in the repertoire.
