We are delighted to host an evening of words and music devoted to the Cragg Vale Coiners with Steve Hartley, author, and Tom Kitching, musician, author, busker and actor who appeared as the fiddler in 'Gallows Pole TV drama.
Steve Hartley has been researching the true story of the Cragg Vale Coiners for many years. His interest in the story was sparked by the knowledge that he is a direct descendant of the gang leader ‘King David’ Hartley. In this book 'The Yorkshire Coiners - The true story of the Cragg Vale Gang, ' Steve presents the facts of the reign of the Cragg Vale gang that has fascinated people through the centuries since, inspiring folk songs, novels, plays and poetry as well as for a TV series and documentary. Steve's "invaluable research" assisted local author Ben Myers' writing of 'The Gallows Pole.' with his unparalleled knowledge the Coiners. Steve will have a talk with readings and Q and A with the audience
Tom Kitching is one of England's leading traditional fiddle players. He has worked as a solo performer, band member, dance caller, violin teacher, and street busker. Tom took an 18-month busking journey to explore England. The book of his experiences isn't really a book about busking, though. It's about people, place, and that elusive beast - Englishness.
Tom appeared in the TV Drama ' Gallows Pole. Traditional music from the period was researched and performed by cast member Jennifer Reid and Tom. In this Words and Music Event, Tom will play music of the 'Coiners' era, share stories and anecdotes from the shooting of the 'Gallows Pole' show, along with the history of the songs and music and respond to audience questions.
