Large Plants started in 2020 as a solo recording project for Jack Sharp, the singer and guitarist for psych-folk luminaries Wolf People (currently on hiatus). The 2022 debut ‘The Carrier’ and newly released ‘The Thorn’ were recorded and performed entirely by Sharp in a barn.
“It was a dirty, rusty, metal shack with no insulation or sound treatment, and it was full of junk, but it sounded weirdly great, and I loved it.” Sharp told Shindig magazine.
The music of Large Plants could be characterised as psychedelic folk-rock; a continuation of Wolf People’s melding of 70’s folk-rock (Mountain, Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention) with the bluesy psychedelia of Black Sabbath, Cream or Traffic.
‘The Thorn’ shows the darker, heavier elements of those influences, driving rhythms and fuzzed-out guitars over distinct folk underpinnings. More contemporary comparisons might be made with the likes of Midlake or Fleet Foxes.
Sharp currently fronts the live incarnation of the band on lead vocals and guitar with Paul Milne on bass and backing vocals, Joe Wooley on guitar and Itamar Rubinger on drums. They have, so far played only a handful of shows including supporting Love with Johnny Echols, Warm Digits and a slot at Barcelona Psych Fest.
The Thorn was released on 17th November 2023 through Ghost Box records on LP, CD and all digital channels
