A Friday night at Jamboree with renowned jazz, afrobeat, dance and avant-gardé musician Bukky Leo and his Afrobeat Quartet, supported by reggae and high life ace Planetman.

Growing up in Lagos Nigeria, Bukky was spotted practising his first saxophone by the original afro-beat drummer Tony Allen. Immediately ushered into Tony’s newly formed band. Bukky went on to play with the great Fela Kuti, where the seeds of afrobeat were being sown. After sometime in the band and under the influence of Tony Allen, Bukky decided to follow his own journey with his distinct style of jazz and a fro-beat, haeding to London where he became one of the forerunners of the acid jazz scene. His first release 'Rejoice in Righteousness' was at the heart of the acid jazz world, going straight to number one in the rhythm and blues, dance and jazz charts, while his follow up album, 'River Nile', led to him to being nominated for the US African Music Awards in New York.

His band tonight features the legendary Kofi Adu of the highlife internationals on drums, the solid irrepressible Dennis Davies of Osibisa and Black Egypt on bass, and the unique sounds of Dan Warderman of the roots and groove fraternity on guitar and effects.

Support on the night comes from Planetman, blending highlife guitars and reggae with earnest folk and brightly soulful vocals. A founding member of iconic London venue Passing Clouds, his monthly Little Blue Ball parties spanned over a decade, legendary for their eclectic mix of music, people and sky-high vibes. He is founder of the Global Beats Festival, which he curated and headlined at Wilton’s Music Hall, and World Music Jam, a successful commission for the BBC’s Lonely Planet event.
