This exciting event brings together writers, historians, illustrators and puppeteers to explore the seaside town as a liminal space between the land and the ocean, home and abroad, wealth and poverty, frivolity and misery, familiarity and alienness, past and present, fact and fantasy. Historically, the hedonistic atmosphere of the seaside town has been underpinned by vice and crime, as represented in novels such as Brighton Rock, films like Quadrophenia and TV dramas including Boardwalk Empire. Today, seaside towns are at the ‘front line’ of challenges including the refugee crisis, austerity, homelessness and the climate emergency.
