BN DAY IX!
FEATURING…IN NO PARTICULAR ODER…
M BUTTERFLY (M Butterfly)
For the past decade M. Butterfly has traded in heartfelt songs about depression, masculinity, queerness (M is openly Bisexual), and protest.
Taking influence from hardened legends such as Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welch and John Prine, cult underground artists such as Vic Chesnutt, Low and Sparklehorse and literary giants such as Sylvia Plath, James Baldwin, Yukio Mishima and Leonard Cohen, M. crafts songs that are highly lyrical and poetic, whilst holding on to a sparse sense of tradition. Live performances are often met with a silent and attentive audience, allowing M.’s strong lyrics to fill the room.
M. plays regularly in Brighton, including The Greys, and has had the good fortune of supporting Phoebe Bridgers, Nadia Reid, Jess Williamson and Brighton contemporaries Squid.
M. has released 4 albums, recorded to tape on a 4-track, usually at home or in the home of a producer, giving his albums a raw, lo-fi sound that is as intimate as it is vulnerable. He has also self published a book of poetry.

A BASIC FAULT (A Basic Fault)
Experimental rock 3-piece A Basic Fault weave a performance that threads power-trio instrumentation into fuzzy psychedelia, pseudo jazz and electronic stylings

R DYER (R Dyer)
‘Peculiar and brilliant’ - Haiku Salut
R.dyer uses anything from found sounds, tin-can phones, synth, musical saw, saxophone, harp, optical theremins and home-made instruments to create intricate looped performances which move from baroque-pop to mesmerising soundscapes via acapella folk songs and stories about dogs in trainers.
All that being said, they’ve said they’re a bit bored playing their normal stuff- so surprises might be in store….

GLASSHOUSE RED SPIDER MITE (Glasshouse Red Spider Mite)
Close friends since early childhood, Art rock band Glasshouse Red Spider Mite were destined to form and realise their shared musical purpose. Recognising the necessity of escaping their hometown in Devon, the boys relocated to Brighton to commit to making music. Equipped with their experience playing in Brighton band Breathe Panel (FatCat records), Benji and Alex joined forces with Ethan to start the band as a vehicle for his songs. Drawing songwriting influences from the intricate arrangements of Talk Talk and the emotional complexities of Elliott Smith, the band added sonic sensibilities akin to Mogwai and deathcrash.
Through their first collection of varied demos and live shows, the band have demonstrated their musical prowess; successfully introducing themselves to the music scene as the new must see Brighton band.
Glasshouse Red Spider Mite are Alex (bass/vocal), Benji (drums) and Ethan (guitar/vocal)

SOFT WALLS (Soft Walls)
Soft Walls is the solo recording project of Dan Reeves, who has spent his entire adult life kicking around in the dust of the UK's underground music scenes. Cutting his teeth in the South West's post-hardcore scene; centred around Exeter's The Cavern club, before moving to the South East and forming his own record label; Faux Discx, and the propulsive post-punk band: Brighton via London's Cold Pumas. Projects have come and gone over the years, but Reeves' Soft Walls has remained, an outlet for whatever musical whim takes his fancy.
'True Love' is Soft Walls' 4th album. Written and recorded at home, during breaks in work. During the aftermath of you-know-what.
For this album Dan leaned heavily in to his guitar playing, searching for those purest moments of true emotion and connection. Aiming to strike an instant blow. "Emotional guitar music. But not Emo." The result of falling in love with an instrument again and playing for the joy of it, much like he did as a teenager. Just older, wiser(?) and certainly more world-weary / teary-eyed.
Thematically, 'True Love' revels in stating its love for everything that is dear to Reeves. Odes to marriage, romance, unconditional love, parenthood and creativity pierce through the record's down-swings that tackle existential crisis and the feeling of falling in to depression. Each song attempts to encapsulate a vivid feeling, be it positive or negative. It's all part of a life worth living.
Although recorded at home, this album marks a leap in to digital mid-fidelity for Soft Walls, embracing a wider, richer sound beyond the tape hiss of earlier releases. That same spirt is still in the mix, but is presented wide-eyed and caffeinated in to clarity. Elevated by the input of a handful of collaborators contributing to the performances and helping to shape it sonically, 'True Love' ends up being the truest version of Soft Walls committed to (digital) tape thus far.

TINA KIT (Tina Kit)
Purveyors of genre-fucking wedgie rock, Tina Kit will grab you by the waistband and have you hanging loose to their scattershot riffs, angular yelps, and capricious sense of swampy rhythm, that at once speaks to the brattishness of the Birthday Party and the wiry guitar driven snarl of post-rock outfits like Unwound. They might even throw in a little power-pop alchemy for good measure.

VAN ZON (Van Zon)
Experimental post-rockers Van Zon played their debut show in June 2023, swiftly solidifying their status as one of Brighton’s most inventive and thrilling newcomers. The enigmatic five-piece, featuring multiple lead vocalists, guitar, violin, keys, clarinet, bass and drums, seamlessly blend elements of baroque pop, jazz, psychedelia and folk to create a progressive, majestic and otherworldly sound. While they have yet to unveil any official releases, Van Zon have gained significant early momentum on the local live circuit, ticking off venues like Green Door Store, The Prince Albert, The Pipeline and The Rossi Bar and playing shows with a host of other exciting bands, including Honeyglaze, Flip Top Head, The New Eves and C Turtle. - Hidden Herd

THE STANFORD FAMILY BAND (The Stanford Family Band)
To listen to a Stanford Family Band song is to be transported to a place of bittersweet memories, of nostalgia, of sunshiney days, of warmth. Endearingly old-fashioned but somehow completely of their time, this Brighton based four piece unashamedly wear their influences on their sleeves – think The Beach Boys, think The Modern Lovers. Their songs gracefully weave complex four-part harmonies with disarmingly memorable melodic hooks, all held together by Elliot Stanford’s unique, captivating lead vocal. This is a band tailor-made to soundtrack those good times you sigh about with a smile on your face in reflective mood on a cold winter’s day. By the time the summer comes around, you’ll struggle to find a more perfect band to dance around in the sun too.

VAN COEUR (Van Coeur)
Brighton three-piece Van Coeur make stark, slow, captivating songs with interweaving guitars, vocals, minimal drums and layered hiss. In the same ballpark as The For Carnation, Low, Acetone and other bleak/sparse post-rock.
Failing Sequence is Van Coeur’s fifth album, and companion piece to Last Light (released June 2022). The songs were predominantly written pre-pandemic but recorded during lockdown windows at the band’s home loft studio. Mastered by Peter Fletcher at Black Bay Studios (Isle of Lewis), the album is released on 16th December 2022 on Mulso Primary Records.
Comprising of core set-up, two guitars and drums, the recordings are augmented by piano, hammered dulcimer, MicroKorg synthesizer, chord organ, tape loops, field recordings, drum machine, and manipulated drones.
Artwork for the album is by regular collaborator artist / poet Gary Goodman, and Richard Adams.

HOLY CLANG (Holy Clang)
Fierce local duo Holy Clang raced us through 5 EP releases from Oct 22 to Aug 23, plus we got a live release to end 2023.
Think of those bass-driven post punk/alt-rock/noise-rock acts of the 90s like shellac, nomeansno, minutemen and even further back to liquid liquid and sometimes just jazz! Drummer Dave jams through all kind of jazzy and sprawling rhythms while Thomas delivers additional vibes on vocals, fascinating basslines and a little synth! Sometimes they’re angry and smashing it up and sometimes they’re just twisting and turning trying to find you a brand new rhythm to mess around with.
