Tim Whitehead, a renowned tenor saxophonist, is praised for his highly personal and gorgeous sound, earning him accolades as one of the finest in the UK jazz scene. Born in Liverpool, he initially pursued law but returned to music, marking the beginning of a prolific career.
Whitehead has played extensively across the UK, Europe, and the USA, collaborating with notable musicians like Phil DeGreg and Giovanni Mirabassi. In the 70s, he toured with Ian Carr’s Nucleus and won the Young Jazz Musician of the Year Award. In the 80s, he joined Loose Tubes and recorded with his own bands. His diverse discography includes albums like "Personal Standards" and collaborations on projects such as "Tides" with the Homemade Orchestra.
Beyond performing, Whitehead co-founded the jazz musicians’ co-operative WayOutWest, chaired it until 2010, and engaged in educational initiatives. Notably, he served as the first musician Artist in Residence at Tate Britain, composing music inspired by JMW Turner's work.
Whitehead's impact extends to education, where he taught jazz, improvisation, composition, and saxophone at various institutions.
In the words of Clive Davis from The Times, Whitehead's music is distinguished by grace and economy, standing out in a crowd of tenor saxophonists.
