The Guardian hailed El Hula’s debut LP HOTEL as "Bizarre & Spectacular", THE NME and UNCUT gave it 4 stars. Blair Jollands gave the project its name so the records would sit real close to Elvis in the record stores. Released by Boy George on his label More Protein, as was El Hula’s follow up LP Violent Love - produced by Gordon Raphael (The Strokes), also received critical acclaim in the UK and Australasia. Boy George describes El Hula as ‘The b*stard son of Desi Arnaz and Jim Morrison with a shot of tequila!’. Singles Augustine & Everything But You received plays across the BBC and US college radio plus had placements on iconic TV series such as Teachers. There was a hiatus of several years between releases while Jollands released a number of albums under his own name however 2024 sees the band reforming, once again teaming up with Gordon Raphael, to produce El Hula’s 2023 Ep, Hide No More, recorded with a 7 piece band live at legendary Dean Street Studios in Soho, London. The current line up boasts Jollands on vocals, guitars and trumpet, Jonny Hillier on Bass, vocalists Frankie David & Reniece Thomas, Gabriellle Pibretti (Stormzy) on baritone sax, jazz legend Filippo Galli on drums and Pete Fussey on guitar.
"Jollands captures Presley’s southern gothic melodrama, no small achievement for one born 12,000 miles from Memphis...smashing"
The Guardian
"It’s the pedal steel drenched ballads like ‘Beautiful Day’ (Like Tomorrow) that really leave the heart staggering down a red carpet towards Nick Cave’s stash of moonshine. Classy" UNCUT
