Anachronic Chronicles: Voyages Inside / Out Asia (Pan Lu; Araki Yu, 63min, 2021) – nonfiction
Presented by: Sine Screen0 | LONDON: BLOC, Arts One Building |

P | Saturday 30th March, 2024 |
N | 1:20pm |
The screening will be followed by Q&A session with director Pan Lu, hosted by Kiki Yu.
Synopsis: Building on home videos made between the 1960s and 1990s from ordinary families around East Asia, the film shows the power of “anti-spectacle” of the folk images that are full of anthropological/sociological messages: the excitement/discomfort about the ability to control the making of moving images for the first time; the (self-)invitations to perform; the half-staged, voyeuristic and unconscious recording of the family. The overlapping themes and similar occasions in the videos incur boredom, the filmmakers’ playful yet insightful conversation stitches the chaotic footage together and gives new life to a nostalgic form of cinema.
About the programme: Dancing with Water 2024 is introducing over 16 film events exploring contemporary China and women's cinema. The programme will be presented from Feburary to April 2024 across venues in London.
The programme is curated by Kiki Tianqi Yu and Shan Tong, which captures a burgeoning energy of fluidity, flexibility and resilience of Chinese women filmmakers and their cinemas, resonating with the Daoist concept of yin and water as not only soft and formless but also pervasive and tenacious.
