Lucy writes:
“Hedge morris dancing is for those of us who don’t have, or can’t be with a group of morris siblings, on May morning, but who still feel the call to dance up the sun! They can dance anywhere they happen to be: it doesn’t have to be an idyllic rural clearing, it can be the steps to a block of flats, or in their backyard.
Hedge morris dancers dress in whatever costume they have lying around, or make something gloriously non-canonical themselves. They dance alone – or with others – just for the joy of it and to welcome the sunrise and the promise of summer ahead.”

Lucy Wright
Lucy Wright, a Leeds-based artist, explores the intersection of folklore and place, often drawing from her vast archive on female and queer-led folk customs to challenge traditional practices and examine gender and class themes. After her time as the lead singer of the BBC Folk Award-nominated act, Pilgrims' Way, she pursued a PhD at Manchester School of Art and later became a Visiting Research Fellow in Folklore at the University of Hertfordshire. Over the past decade, she's showcased her art in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and received multiple awards and commissions from esteemed institutions.
