Elgar 'Cello Concerto, Walton Symphony No.1 and Berlioz - Royal Hunt and Storm.
Elgar, one of many composers to admire Berlioz, described his 'cello concerto as “a man’s attitude to life”, and for many years this appeared to be his last orchestral work; a swansong of compelling and fragile beauty.
Walton’s first symphony was written in the aftermath of a severe break up with his then mistress; " jealously and hatred all mixed up with love", he said later. The blazing finale reflects in part Walton’s new relationship. Walton experienced such difficulty completing the work that it was premiered without the finale in 1934 and then premiered complete, with the Finale the following year.
