Charlie Fretwell began his musical education at the age of six at Stockport Music School under the tutelage of Sandra McShannon, achieving Grade 8 distinction through the Yamaha teaching method. In preparation for his Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) auditions, he refined his advanced piano technique and interpretative skills with concert pianist Yiyi Su.
At sixteen, Charlie enrolled at Xaverian College, where he was mentored by Andrew Levendis in performance, musicality, and theory. During his time at Xaverian, he also received piano instruction from Ben Attfield and Louis De Satge, composition lessons from Michael Doherty, choral singing guidance from Ged Marciniak, and violin lessons from Duncan Reid, then Sophie Sully (Stockport Music School). Whilst at Xaverian, he's placed top 3 in the young musician of the year competition, performed at the RNCM as a soloist and with choir/orchestra, and has helped other students with technique and musicality.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Charlie serves as an organist and pianist at a church in Altrincham, performing as a soloist during services. He recently received an offer to study composition and piano at the RNCM, starting in September 2024. Charlie aspires to further his development as a musician at the RNCM, with the ultimate goal of establishing an international career dedicated to advancing the field of music.
