Phil Lee is an American singer-songwriter, whose long and varied career has seen him work alongside some of the best musicians in the business. There's not many musicians who can say they've played with both The Flying Burritto Brothers and Crazy Horse.
A musician and songwriter from his teens, Lee's first professional gig came in the 1960s, playing drums on a TV show in North Carolina. Lee wandered off to New York City in 1971, where he played drums for the band Amazing Grace (an outfit that included future Emmylou Harris Hot band member Hank DeVito). Lee moved to Los Angeles around 1974, where he did some movie soundtrack work with Jack Nitzsche and did some truck driving for Neil Young. After a brief stint with The Flying Burrito Brothers in 1993, Lee moved to Nashville where he now lives and releases his critically acclaimed music.
Phil Lee's music is the distillation of decades' worth of playing in juke joints and bars from one end of America to the other. The years he has spent sitting behind the drums, have given him plenty of time to think about what he'd do if he ever got to the front of the stage. Now that he's there, he's not wasting anyone's time with lame material.
The calibre of musicians who play on his critically acclaimed albums tells you something of the regard in which he is held. You'll find guitar master Bill Kirchen among players whose credits include Wilco, Lucinda Williams & Johnny Cash. He even did a whole album with Neil Young's legendary backing band Crazy Horse.
“He’s got the songs. We wouldn’t play with him if he didn’t have the songs. He should be playing stadiums, arenas but he’s playing in living rooms.”
Ralph Molina – Neil Young & Crazy Horse
"Combining the social conscience of Woody Guthrie with the twisted fury of Jerry Lee Lewis" Associated Press
"Fans of Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons, Guy Clark and Greg Brown will dig Lee.” Atlantic City Weekly
"A weathered, wizened troubadour, he sounds like the sort of guy you’d cross at your own peril.” Musoscribe
"Brash and literate and full of one-liners. He’s like the love child of Bob Dylan and Joan Rivers." The Tennessean
"Sounding as much like Dylan’s twisted kid brother as he ever did. Witty, wicked, compassionate, profane and misanthropic.” Flyinshoes
