LET'S TALK MOVIES 'GENRE STUDY' WITH TONY MCKIBBIN - Genre films are often caught in a conundrum. They must remain predictable enough to fit neatly into their genre (Western; Horror; Musical; Science Fiction) but original enough for the viewer to believe they have seen something new. By looking at examples from three genres, we will illustrate how filmmakers manage to conform to our expectations while also creating novelty. Attendees will analyse five films with a focus on Django Unchained, Get Out, The Conjuring, Her, and Ex Machina.

The event will conclude with a screening of Alex Garland’s Ex Machina.

Ex Machina - A young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.
