Event information
We're delighted to present an evening concert and afternoon workshops featuring two exciting American performers. A generation apart, Evie Ladin and Sophie Wellington both grew up deep in the traditional folk music & dance scenes in the Eastern USA. Exploring an extensive shared repertoire of old-time & American roots music, as both percussive dancers and multi-instrumentalists, they make a powerful duo. We're delighted that the excellent Sugarwell Hill duo (Simon Robinson & Mick Russell) will be opening the show with a short support set too. It's going to be a hugely entertaining cornucopia of Appalachian roots music!
Please check ticket type listings carefully and select the right one for you.
Concert 8pm (doors 7.30pm)
Workshops 3pm - 4.30pm approx
Renowned USA banjoist, singer, songwriter and step dancer Evie Ladin has performed all over the world and has previously toured the UK on many occasions, in a duo with Keith Terry as well as with the Stairwell Sisters, winning acclaim at events including WOMAD Festival and Edinburgh TradFest. Evie started playing banjo aged eight and clogging when she was just five! Based in Oakland, California, she has released numerous albums and is a sensational live performer. She's an in-demand teacher of dance, singing and banjo, teaching online and in person at workshops and camps across the USA. Evie is also a director of the International Body Music Festival and a leading proponent of the art of body percussion. She is a 2020 Jubilation Fellowship recipient, awarded to artists with an exceptional talent for bringing joy to people through music and movement.
Originally from Virginia, Sophie Wellington is an exciting young American musician and dancer who, like Evie, was brought up steeped in community music, attending festivals and camps from a young age. Sophie attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston and has since released her debut solo album, showcasing her versatility across old time fiddle tunes, percussive dance duets and vocal jazz standards. She performs with several bands and has been touring with Willi Carlisle in 2024, as well as collaborating with Evie. Sophie is also an experienced teacher and has taught fiddle and step dance at music camps including the Blue Ridge Old Time Music Week in Virginia and the Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia.
This duo concert is sure to be a very special musical occasion, combining the amazing talents of these two outstanding artists - on banjo, fiddle, guitar, voices and feet! The artists will also lead a choice of participatory workshops in the afternoon.
