In 1793 Jane Austen visited Southampton in search of adventure and with a liking for Gothic novels that were to inspire Northanger Abbey, she was following in the footsteps of the founders of the Gothic movement Horace Walpole & Thomas Grey who had visited Southampton in search of ghostly inspiration.
