Hello our wonderful audience!
The programme for our Christmas Concert is set to be a festive feast of 19th Century Russian music: for starters we have the lively dances of Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakov, followed by a sumptuous main, the christmas classic, Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite, and then a glorious flambéed pudding in the shape of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony Number 1 in D minor!
Capriccio Espagnol is, first and foremost, a set of dances. Even though the title evokes ideas of Italy and Spain, it was actually written entirely in Russia and though pulling motifs and themes from traditional Spanish folk songs and dances, relied solely on Rimsky-Korsakov's research and ideas rather than from his travels in the Navy. Initially the piece was planned to be a Fantasy for violin and orchestra, it evolved into a fully fledged orchestral show piece!
Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite is one of his most magical suites and brings Christmas to life through its luscious melodies. The music in the suite was taken almost verbatim from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Ballet. Tchaikovsky himself did not actually choose the pieces from the ballet which would be put into the suite as it “pleases [him] in its entirety from the beginning to the end!” So, it was up to his two close friends, Pyotr Jurgenson and Aleksandr Ziloti, to compile and release the suite after Tchaikovsky’s death.
Coming to our last piece we have Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No.1, which on its first outing completely flopped! A result of a very drunk conductor and one that put Rachmaninoff into a bit of a meltdown - sounds very Eastenders Christmas Day special to us! It was only after his death that the full score was pieced back together from the recovered parts and the Symphony’s full splendour was finally given the recognition it deserved as a part of his fantastic orchestral repertoire. We hope you share our love for the piece - let’s just limit the mulled wine until the end…
Doors are at 6:30pm, concert starts at 7:00pm sharp, hope to see you there!
