Event information

As part of Muswell Hill Sustainability Group's Green Open Homes season ...

A 50 minute tour and Q&A by the hosts of a mid-80s, detached, single storey, timber construction on masonry & brick foundation, including ...

• 16 x 4 kW Sanyo Direct Hit solar panels.
• 2 x air-source heat pumps – one, internally to provide hot water, and one externally to feed a sealed under floor heating system (the property has no boiler).
• High-efficiency Westfire 4.5kW wood burning stove with a heat-retaining soapstone plinth.
• Argon-filled double-glazed doors and windows along the entire north elevation and most of the south elevation. (The sole remaining south-facing window - to the office - is double-glazed to the standard common in the mid-1980s).
• Re-insulation of all external walls incorporating (i) the original external clapboarding; (ii) 100 mm rigid, foil-backed Kingspan Thermwall insulation; (iii) 20 mm plywood sheets with thermal-taped seams between the insulation and (iv) 15 mm of plasterboard.
• Re-insulation of the floors incorporating (i) Kingspan Thermwall as above; (ii) 100 mm of screed (which accommodates the under-floor heating ducts) above the insulation; (iii) 20 mm of chipboard above the screed; and (iv) 12.5mm engineered wooden flooring resting on the chipboard.
• Retro-fitted, LED lighting throughout (66 fittings).
• Installation of a number of energy saving appliances, including a boiling water tap and Miele energy-saving kitchen appliances.
• Installation of water softener to increase the life of the household plumbing, white goods, etc.
• Installation of thermal blinds and curtains on all windows and glazed doors.
. water softener to increase the life of the household plumbing, white goods, etc.

“We are generally pleased with the energy saving measures we have introduced. We are particularly pleased with the air-source heat pump that provides our hot water; with the wood burning stove; with the added insulation and with the kitchen appliances including the boiling water tap. The argon-filled double-glazed windows and doors also seem to be very efficient during cold weather (the door and window frames get colder than the glass!).“ Homeowners
