As part of Muswell Hill Sustainability Group's Green Open Homes season ...
A 1.5 hour double-hander talk by eco-architects Ben Ridley followed by Jo Edwards, culminating in an open Q&A with both architects and refreshments.
Ben Ridley is an architect and director of Architecture for London, award-winning architects dedicated to creating healthy buildings with natural, breathable materials, to achieve the highest sustainability and comfort standards, including Passivhaus and Enerphit.
He is also host of one of the MHSG Green Open Homes house tours: a fabulously extended and refurbished Edwardian house in Muswell Hill N10; and will be sharing his personal and professional experiences of retrofitting it.
The house aims to be an exemplar for the sustainable refurbishment of a typical terraced home in London with a constrained budget – both embodied energy and energy in-use have been considered in dept – and to reveal the original structure of the property and celebrate its modest beauty.
Jo Edwards will also offer a personal and professional perspective on domestic decarbonisation measures.
Expect tales of solar, water, sedum, pumps and glass from her. Successes and struggles with, appetite for, design of, planning permission for, and installation of various solar panels, rain water harvesting, sedum roofs, heat pumps and higher spec glazing.
Jo Edwards, (B.Arch (1st), dip.Arch, ARB, RIBA III) runs a two-person practice in Islington with her husband Adrie Rensen. Edwards Rensen Architects (ERA) specialise in high end, design led (you could call it ‘Eco Chic’) residential work.
ERA have been published in several national and international design magazines including Grand Designs, RIBA Journal, Wallpaper* and The Times. They were selected for New London Architecture’s Don’t Move Improve exhibition. London Open House invited them to open one of their projects to the public on Open House weekend. They are also on Channel 4’s Extraordinary Extensions.
Jo Edwards has over 25 years experience of leading complex projects from inception to completion. She got a first-class degree at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow & won several prizes. She has worked on residential, cultural, leisure & conservation projects in London and The Netherlands at practices including Lifschutz Davidson, Mecanoo, ECD (Environmentally Conscious Design) and PTE.
After a maternity career break Jo set up Jo Edwards Architects in 2010. She was joined by her husband, Adrie Rensen to create Edwards Rensen Architects (ERA) in 2012.
Both talks will also be live-streamed for those that can't attend, and archived on the Muswell Hill Sustainability Group You Tube channel after the event.
