Event information
Gabriel Moreno (host of Poetry Mondays and Gibraltarian poet and singer-songwriter) presents four ececltic and fascinating alternative folk acts which are part of the thriving London underground roots scene. The emphasis for these nights will be in singularity and the craft of songwriting plus some fiery performances with unexpected twists and turns.
The four acts will gather for a one-off performance at the legendary Spiritual Bar in Camden. Moreno will be performing poems and songs too.
Gabriel Moreno
Gabriel Moreno is Gibraltarian singer-songwriter, currently based in London. An irresistibly engaging performer, he combines a latin exuberance and passion with a rare lyrical calibre (he is also an accomplished poet, with 12 books published to date). Performing on nylon string guitar and accompanied by the Quivering Poets (a group of acclaimed musicians from the London and Barcelona jazz and folk scene), he creates a live experience that has been described as ”Taberna Folk” - at once both energetic and intimate, anarchic and absorbing.
Diego Brown and the Good Fairy
Diego Brown and the Good Fairy is an eclectic duo with unusual vocals and clever lyrics, backed by kazoo, swanee whistle, accordion, melodica, bicycle wheel (!) and guitar.
Serving up a deliciously weird musical stew, this award-winning duo take their audiences on a magic-realist tour of the forgotten corners of modern life in Britain, visiting spooky country, sly bossa nova and buzzsaw tango on the way. With songs that find glamour in the everyday - dogs, barber shops, graffiti, Jackson Pollock's shoes - this sister and brother duo have been described as "The Carpenters on a lost weekend in Twin Peaks".
Andy Kershaw has been playing the CD Fairy Stories on his radio show. Diego Brown and the Good Fairy are superb entertainers destined to die penniless and in obscurity, but willing to put on a good show in the meantime.
Adam Beattie
Scottish singer-songwriter and guitarist Adam Beattie has become a celebrated musician of the London scene. He has been active since 2003 and has released 5 albums of his own songs. Having roots in Scottish folk music, as well as a lifelong interest in old time jazz, blues and other folk styles, his music spans many genres, but is all held together by Adam's distinctive voice and narrative lyrics.
Beattie has recently released his brand new solo album 'Somewhere Round The Bend' on 12" and CD which has received praise from the likes of Mojo Magazine describing it as "Uplifting reveries of love and loss through smoky jazz and romantic balladry", Line Of Best Fit calling it "Stirring Folk Balladry" and Loud And Quiet Magazine awarding it 8/10.
Dave Burn
Dave Burn is a London-based rootsy folk Americana singer-songwriter distinguished by his memorable melodies and shrewd lyricism. A founding member of folk band ahab, he also currently performs with Orphan Colours and singer-songwriter Kirsten Adamson in harmony laden duo The Marriage.
More recently he’s turned his hand to production, producing Gabriel Moreno’s recent single “Vertigo”
