Event information
The Eastern side of the Old Town has kept its secrets close. There are outstanding medieval remains in the southern section. However, the real story starts around 1800 as Southampton’s genteel Spa period is overtaken by industrialisation. The coming of the railway and building of the docks attracts thousands of workers, and jerry-built houses spring up to the Back of the Walls from the Ditches to Threefield Lane. Here were found a bewildering crisscross of lanes, courts, cuts, and alleyways. Post-war slum clearance may have changed this area beyond recognition, but its story remains to be told.
Early booking recommended, number of tickets limited to 10 per walk.
