JIM LOCKEY & THE SOLEMN SUN // @jlandtss
Returning after a 10 year hiatus with latest album ‘Colour’ - a 90’s tinged indie/rock record filled with soaring choruses, unapologetic hooks and brutal honesty - marks their most ambitious effort to date. If the band’s critically acclaimed second album ‘Death’ (2012, Xtra Mile Recordings) was concerned with the end, ‘Colour’ is a narration of everything that comes after. It’s a break up record, with hope and ambition.
Focused on prominent occurrences in Lockey’s life after ‘Death’ the album discusses the thoughts and feelings he’s most at war with. Dealing with the premature end of a marriage, rediscovering himself as an individual and finding ways through are themes that bubble under the surface throughout; with notions of all punctuating each song.
Tipped as one of NME’s bands to watch for 2012 the band filled much of 2012 & 2013 with extensive touring including a 30 date UK headline tour, a further 20 date run in support of Frank Turner, a US run supporting Dropkick Murphy’s plus UK and EU festivals and a welcome return to SXSW. Following an explorative stint under the shortened moniker of 'Solemn Sun' the band are back to pick up where they left off.

CHINA BEARS (Acoustic) // @chinabears
If melodic diligence counts for anything, China Bears are masters of their arty leftfield craft. Through a series of terrific tours and exquisitely-balanced EP releases 'I've Never Met Anyone Like You', 'Statue Still' and 'All That Distance', they have displayed an innate ability to blend the alt-rock rush with the acoustic hush.
Rousing and romantic, debut album ‘Participation Trophy’ (Fierce Panda Records) feels cinematic in its grandeur, whilst also feeling incredibly personal in its storytelling. It was recorded in the autumnal sunshine of Leith with Rod Jones from Idlewild at the production controls. From the driving ‘I Will Break My Own Heart’, the twinkling ‘Beck and Call’, the electric force of ‘Total Communication Breakdown’ to the blossoming ‘Gracie’, there is a song to accompany everyone’s own life soundtrack.
