Event information
Our programme takes inspiration from two pianists - Jane Austen and Clara Schumann - and explores the different roles music played in their lives.
The first part will be a selection of pieces by composers featured in Jane Austen's music collection, including some which were copied out by JA herself. This was a time when for women, playing the piano was 'an innocent diversion' and they would have played primarily in the home. Jane Austen took great delight in her daily practice and was always ready to play lively dance music to amuse her relations.
The second part of our concert will be Clara Schumann's Piano Trio. Clara Schumann was born just two years after Jane Austen's death, and went on to be one of the greatest concert pianists of her era.
Lucy and Jonny have been performing as a duo since 2017 and they are passionate about introducing their audiences to lesserknown works. Past performances as a duo include at Classical Sheffield’s Classical Weekend 2019 and in Annabelle
Lawson’s in:spire concert series. In January 2020 they performed the inaugural concert of the Sounds of the City concert series in St Matthew’s Church, Carver Street. Between 2018 and 2021 they had a regular Sundayafternoon concert series at Fulwood Old Chapel, Sheffield.
In 2019 the couple embarked on a new project with the Friends of Greenhill Library when they led a “Music for Kids” day. They performed original incidental music, composed by Jonny, to illustrate the stories of Little Red Riding Hood and The Three
Little Pigs. They also ran sessions introducing their instruments to young children. They have continued to develop this work, including three more music days in Greenhill and assemblies in several schools in Sheffield.
